My family has been making what we've called "caramel french toast" for my entire life but with slices of just regular white bread. I want to make the same but with a brioche instead and elevate it a bit more. I'm pretty sure the caramel is a brown sugar mix, nothing crazy. Should be interesting!

I've increased my reading a lot this year since my job has a bit of down time and I don't have much cell service, and a small library of books at home that I figure I should read.

I also watch Jeopardy every night, and not that it's any true measure of intelligence but I've gotten a number of answers right only because of books I've read this year. A Kurt Vonnegut question, and one about The Secret History by Donna Tartt the other day which I'm in the middle of. Just a fun anecdote.

This is my first year owning a house and I haven't had a soil test yet so I'm not planning on doing any vegetable gardening yet, although I really want to get some potted tomatoes going at least cause I feel like they're easier for a beginner.

What I have started is getting rid of the lesser celandine infestation that I'm assuming someone planted as clover but it's invasive so I had to get rid of it. I planted some greenery (rhododendron, ferns, and transplanted some hostas to better locations that were in abundance around the property) and mulched to define the garden bed which was cool. I probably should have done it a little differently, but hey I'll live and learn. I really want to get more ferns and a forsythia so it comes in nice and yellow next year.

There's an older dogwood tree (~75 years old) that I got to see bloom for the first time this year and I could have cried it was so beautiful. It's really cool seeing the garden come alive and trees leaves come back in waves from the previous owner.

I need to take down a cherry tree that was crushed by a falling branch from my neighbors tree before I moved in, which is unfortunate. But a maple sapling seems to have taken root nearby and I kind of want to see how long it can last. And lastly my favorite thing so far is this little Hardy fig tree I got that's leafing and it's so cool taking care of something. I've never had an appreciation for this stuff before and it's teaching me so much patience.

I met my current fiance on Tumblr over ten years ago. Gosh I never thought that would make me feel old. We tagged things we both liked and eventually met up one day. I dated a few people from Tumblr in college, more than okcupid or tinder at the time. Connections seemed more organic and authentic on that platform even though it wasn't meant for dating. It's weird but people were strangely open on it for awhile, the things they reblogged or posted gave you a real sense of who they were. It didn't feel like there were influencers the same way there are now, although there were plenty of "Tumblr famous" people, they were simply just cool.

As for the success of my current relationship, it seems we were also very lucky. I tend to attribute it to both of us having similar interests in art and music, political ideologies, middle class family upbringings, and future goals and aspirations. I think the similar middle class upbringing is more important than people want to admit because the way you were brought up comes with a lot of certain expectations about people and the world. If it doesn't line up for a couple it can add to the friction a relationship naturally has.

So much good stuff here. Thank you for taking the time to write, a lot of this I've been mulling over for a long time in general. Particularly the idea that social media has made everyone feel like they need to know all the answers. This is especially weighing on me as I navigate a job search where you often times do need to appear to have the answers just to get an interview.

I've started sharing my blog recently and my fiance said what you touched on in that it was more vulnerable than something you'd typically see someone post about. Anytime I try to be something or someone I'm not it shows, so I suppose I'll continue to lean into that and find my voice.

Honestly, even simply getting off social media lately has helped with just simply enjoying media consumption (books, movies, etc.) and the art creation process without any pressure or need to share about it. When I do post, it does feel more genuine.

See I’m conflicted, I wouldn’t mind them in my city. I would rather take public transportation over Uber but it’s gotten a lot worse lately. Between people openly shooting up on the platform in the middle of the day and encountering massive groups of teenagers wearing full face coverings smoking on the train it creates a sense of lawlessness. This isn’t a permanent solution though, and while it is definitely posturing, an increased police/military presence would make me feel a little safer.

The landing sounds rough. After hearing about all the difficulty recent attempts have had I'm surprised we did it what appears to be so seamlessly in the 60s.

Thank you for sharing this! Blot looks like exactly what I'm looking for.

I purchase domains when I have ideas but then never use them. I have a self hosted Hugo site for my resume/portfolio, but involves a certain amount of maintenance that's fine for my main site, but still a little too much for a simple blog website where I just want to post random thoughts.

Edit: Blot is awesome, thanks again. It took me five minutes to setup and it's so intuitive and easy to use. It solves most of my problems with Hugo, and I can just post blogs whenever, wherever so much easier now.

I just need to figure out how to self host it. Awesome recommendation, I'll be keeping my eye out for more of your newsletters.

Anecdotal; but I can definitely tell a marked improvement in mood/stress levels in my own life after regularly eating foods with probiotics and increasing my own fiber intake but I wouldn't be surprised if I was simply placebo-ing myself.

My fiance and I just bought a house this past year and it has an adorable little backyard with a beautiful dogwood tree I can't wait to see flower, a couple of hydrangeas, crepe Myrtles, and a few other random plants I need to identify. When we first moved in the whole yard was severely overgrown with weeds and thistles. Thankfully I've taken care of that for now, but am anticipating it trying to come back early in spring so I'll have to make sure I'm on top of it.

Other than managing weeds, I need to learn how to take care of these plants, transplant some for better yard design, and just try to learn and experiment with gardening for the first time. Does anyone have any tips for beginners?

I recently took a sales job at a retail location that's pretty hands on with their guests. I had to ask everyone I saw if they needed anything/had any questions and was "rejected" plenty of times. I haven't tried yet to see if maybe I'll be less scared to ask a stranger if I can take their portrait but I can see how something like that will help. Pretty safe way to get that exposure IMO.

Damn you're serious? Have you checked out getting freeze dried food instead? Most have a 25 year expiration, you won't need to eat a can of chili each week to replenish. Plus cans can rust and get botulism and stuff, seems like a hassle. Go to any outdoor store and they should have like a bucket you can buy in bulk. I want a bucket just to have, doesn't go bad and in the event of an emergency I'm sure I'll be glad I have it.

Edit: and idk a bug out canoe actually doesn't seem so crazy with all the flooding we've been getting lately now that I think about it.
