After months of speculation and negations it looks like it's finally happening. Inter Miami is in last place in the league, so Messi has his work cut out for him. Whatever the team's success, this seems like a huge win for MLS as a whole and soccer/football in general in North America.

The "in use" or "occupied" mode where those around you see some coloured cloud in your vision area simultaneously looked cool and gave me extreme Black Mirror vibes.

That said I don't think it sounds unfairly priced. It truly looks like a remarkable piece of hardware, and almost like what I thought the future of computing might look like when I was a kid.

I didn't really see any killer apps, but I didn't see any on the original iPhone either so I won't pass judgement there until developers have their way with it.

It's definitely out of my budget, but I won't be surprised if it catches on in time.

I'm sure most of us can agree that Tildes is awesome, but is there anything you don't like about Tildes or that you would change?

For myself, I dislike how so many topics are the same repeated "get to know you" questions. As an example, here's what I see on the first page of the site:

    • What upcoming games or updates are you excited about?
    • What games have you been playing, and what's your opinion on them?
    • What have you been eating, drinking, and cooking?
    • What have you been listening to this week?
    • What games have you been playing, and what's your opinion on them?
    • What creative projects have you been working on?

Three of them are essentially the same question/topic, and the discussions threads end up very repetitive. It sometimes feels like the first page of Tildes is the Jonathan Frakes asks you things meme.

Is there anything you dislike about Tildes or would change?

Has there ever been discussion of adding a ~local group that users could then tag with country, city, etc.?

I know not everyone in the community sees it as a priority, but for myself and many others a native app is a dealbreaker. It means the difference between using Tildes as a novelty I look at once a month (usually when I am pissed off at some user hostile change reddit made), and using it regularly.

As great as the website is, it can never compare to the speed, smoothness, and just general usability of a great native app. Things like logging in, menu navigation, search, etc. are always going to be cumbersome on a mobile browser.

It’s very common for kids identified early as ‘gifted’ to never end up reaching their full potential because - as the first comment correctly pointed out - they’ve never had to struggle for anything. Once they are put in a situation that isn’t easy for them, they give up or tend to take the path of least resistance.

I lucked out and got a Switch to relieve lockdown boredom. I had one years back and sold it, so this is my second rodeo.

Animal Crossing - New Horizons - It’s the first Animal Crossing game I’ve played, and I bought into the hype. It’s cute and relaxed, but I can’t say I love it or would highly recommend it to everybody. I’m about 80 hours in and it seems like all you really do is collect things and try to arrange them to look nice. It’s a great time waster, but I also regret how much time I’ve wasted on it, and will continue to.

Celeste - Revisiting this game and it’s just as great as ever. Difficult but fair 2D platforming game that is a pleasure to play, and rewards you every step of the way. Only complaint is I find the story/cutscenes boring and unnecessary, but I’m probably the minority in that.

Shinobi (SEGA Ages) - Excellent arcade port of a title that has held up surprisingly well. The dev team did a great job adding QoL improvements, and it’s great to see classics handled with care as opposed to the typical retro port cash grabs you often see from whoever ended up with the licence.

It’s been mentioned often before, but the issue isn’t COBOL or learning COBOL. Yes it’s ancient by today’s standards, but it’s not horrible or even that difficult to learn.

What is horrible is jumping into a 50 year old code base that’s been hacked together by just as many contributors over the years. Trying to figure out how to deal with years of fixes for weird edge cases, squeezed in business requirements from long gone PM, hacks... all thrown together in a time before best practices and modern CS fundamentals. A time when coding was something you learned on the job.

On top of that throw in minimal to no documentation, nobody around with a deep understanding of the system, and the fact that most of these systems are business critical (if they weren’t, they were likely migrated to something else already) so make a mistake and it could end up costing the company millions.

You can teach any programmer COBOL. It’s becoming familiar enough with the spaghetti that takes time, and it’s not the type of work most programmers worth their salt want to spend their career learning.

While I wait for my Switch to arrive and cure me of COVID boredom, I've been playing Phantasy Star IV on the Sega Genesis Mini. I'm really surprised how well it's held up and fast-paced it is. It can be a bit of a grind at times - as most RPGs were back in the day - and the translation can be a bit questionable, but overall it's a great RPG with some nice little surprises along the way.
