A friend of mine in that area visited Fermi Lab recently. It's still a thing and he had a great time with his family.

When we lived in Chicago many years ago, we'd go to Fermi Lab to hear science lectures about all kinds of topics. They ran about once a month and were presented by scientists in the field.

I considered changing the title of my submission to something more generically applicable, but considering the political bent of the article itself, I didn't feel like it'd be right to give people false impressions just to get more clicks.

Yeah I think this was a good way to go.

And yeah I think there's a lot of merit to migrating federated sites and others that aren't ran by big tech companies. I'm currently waiting a bit to see if any friends wish to come with before I join any (outside Tildes). I've also considered running an instance for my friend group, but I don't really know what that entails.

it's true that personal blogs don't have the same level of reach and relevancy that they used to before the rise of centralized "ad-verse" platforms like Twitter.

My belief on this is that Twitter just made it more convenient and cleaner to access. It's so much better to just read a Tweet than click a link to a site, let it load, read a bit of it to decide if you like it, then have to go back to Twitter. It's the same premise as RSS I suppose. Keeping it all easily available in one place.

You make a lot of good points about how Mastodon wouldn't really help the bloggers either.

I also really appreciate that post you referenced. I recently deleted/scaled back many of my accounts (deleted Twitter, left lots of Discord servers, left Facebook [for good this time], and left Instagram). All my good friends have my number or other contact info, so there is no issue. I don't really feel like I'm missing toooooo much, as when I meet up with friends they'll just talk about what's been happening anyways, so I still get informed.

This link refused to work for me on any connection worked after retrying after 10 minutes, but saying you didn't even read the whole thing isn't a good look for someone who is trying to use it as a reputable source. Especially when the essay is only like 20 pages of actual text to read, with the rest being images and sources.

Anyways, this post really isn't very convincing to me. Nothing is really supported by any evidence outside of he-said, she-said.

Left wing bloggers are allowed to continue to write and their followers are allowed to see their posts but their posts no longer receive the desired reach.

I don't know if these bloggers (only 1 is depicted as having a problem) aren't receiving views because of shifty stuff by Facebook or if their content doesn't have enough engagement in the first place. It's like complaining that you don't get put on YouTube trending when you have a thousand views.

If the bloggers go and announce their move, the rest will follow.

This seems highly doubtful to me. Not many would leave behind their Twitter or Facebook that has connections to their real friends to be able to listen to what a blogger has to say. The point of "just keep using the Facebook account too" sort of accounts for it, but will anybody really miss seeing their favorite blogger's posts enough to join another site?

Saying that "some bloggers are having a hard time, so everyone should ditch Facebook" isn't a great argument. They didn't even mention the massive privacy issues at all outside of saying that Mastodon has no "tracking".

One issue I can think of is some confusion. Say user 1 posts a video. User 2 comments with another video linked. User 3 responds to 2 with a timestamp. Does it link to user 2's video or the OP?...

One issue I can think of is some confusion. Say user 1 posts a video. User 2 comments with another video linked. User 3 responds to 2 with a timestamp. Does it link to user 2's video or the OP? Perhaps limiting the time stamping to top-level comments would solve it.

Hm yes that does make a lot of sense. Having multiple features per character can be confusing and overcomplicating it.

See what events your local library has! Mine has several movie nights a month and game nights. Either free admission or like a dollar. Very cheap for a few hours of quality time.

Might I suggest using @XX:XX for this? The colon cannot be used in a username so it wouldn't lead to issues with pinging users, and the @ makes perfect sense for this purpose.

Imma need some context for this. I think many people have wondered, but where the hell did you get an answer?

I don't want my grandma to know I once asked what was the taste of human meant (answer: pork), or how long wold I live if I ate myself starting from the big tow.

What a shitty company. I'm glad Twitter has reacted to them now. Just waiting for Facebook and their other sources to do the same.
