Not to mention that there are various other organizations that don't do these scummy things AND are more for 2A rights (for everyone) than the NRA.

One thing I'd like to note about excerpts is that when I see a post that has one comment, and I open it to see that it is an excerpt that didn't add any commentary, I tend to be frustrated since I had wanted to add to a discussion that already existed.

Many times I have commented that excerpts tend to run very long, to the point where they are >50% of the article. That's just unacceptable in the cases where the website isn't paywalled and isn't a PITA to navigate.

(Edit: I still think posting an entire article when paywalled isn't great, but it has more merit than doing so as an excerpt.)

Oh, and I like that you've outsourced your potential discussion to another platform.

Yeah as soon as I posted on Tildes I edited my post with the link back to here on the bottom, in case there's anybody who actually uses the feed and needs a link. I could use Disqus, but I don't think that platform encourages the kind of discussion I'm looking for, let alone actually get discussion (I almost never see people commenting on Disqus).

I'm not particularly worried about it. If anything changes they'll just push microtransactions harder with regard to newer items. I doubt the game will be unplayable when played for free though. Also there is no real need to stop playing a game preemptively or even a couple weeks into that acquisition (which hasn't even happened yet afaik). I'm just having fun while I can, and I hope that I can still have fun even after the acquisition (if it even happens).

Just the gossip of "x will buy x" isn't enough to make me worried, it's happened numerous times over the years with tons of other companies and after the initial backlash nothing really changes too significantly. I just like to have fun with my friends :/

For any other readers of this thread (HT already knows I got it I think): I actually bought the HP Envy 15-inch (read my recent comments for more info about it). The battery life is great and as @Akir said, the pen is nice. Don't use it while the monitor is standing up though since there is a lot of wobble (pretty common when using a pen on a standing screen). The battery estimate is about 12 hours while in "prefer battery life" mode (not "battery savings", which is slightly more). It only seems to get to 75°C at peak, so it isn't obscenely hot.

A friend of mine shipped parts for the keyboard he built through FedEx. It went from China to Japan, back to China, then back to Japan, then to the US. By the time it was supposed to have arrived it was still in China (the first time, not the second time in China).

FedEx is awful. When I ordered my laptop it was supposed to require a signature for delivery. I was away from home for a day when it was delivered. I got an email from HP saying "hope you enjoy your new product" so I checked the delivery status and it said delivered. The problem with this is that it was raining and I was not home to take the box in to avoid rain damage. I had to make a friend go pick it up and open the box to make sure my $1000 purchase wasn't ruined.

Luckily it was fine, but FedEx's site mysteriously did not have a signature image on file, even though it said it was signed for (by who????). I'd pay premiums to not use FedEx and use USPS.

This is genius. It seems like Firefox protects from it but Edge definitely does not.

Or just go here and watch your RAM usage. Some browsers tend to protect users against it, but it works well enough for me. I never see most of the bots afterwards :)

These changes often happen in a span of 5 years, which seems pretty unlikely (the part about your political beliefs changing is mostly aimed at 40+people who have seen enough change in the world (although from what I've heard from you, barely) to change your political opinions

5 years is more than enough to change people's political opinions for any age. In the US, Barack Obama was president 5 years ago. The political climate has drastically changed since then, enough for many people to do complete 180s. See r/trumpgret for that.

Also, IMO, the concept of the political compass is sincerely flawed since it oversimplifies all aspects of your beliefs in order to put you onto a coordinate system. I much prefer the multi-category scales of e.g. authority vs liberty over it, but even this system is too simplified. Designating people into groups like this serves no good purpose other than to find people who think similarly, but there's no context for WHY they got a 96% on liberty.

Yeah it's really laid back and kind. Lol that's a good one. What's the command to change it in the 2020 version (for the temporary change)? I've seen colored names for tracks and rarely a few users.

Along with many others here, I got a new laptop. I got the 2020 HP Envy 15z (ds100 variant). Aside from the bloatware (2 preinstalled VPN apps, McAfee, and much more) I have enjoyed it a lot. Installing a fresh copy of Windows was probably quicker than uninstalling all that garbage. It is much more responsive than my old dual core Intel laptop. Being able to have more than ten browser tabs open at a time is awesome, not that I let that happen often. I opted for the 15z-ds100 variant due to it having a significantly better price than the other 15z variant which only added some different IO and an option for a brighter screen.

    I selected the following specs:

    • Ryzen 4700u (8 cores/8 threads, 2ghz base clock, 4.1ghz boost clock) which gets quite toasty when playing games, but for less intensive tasks is quite cool with all fans off
    • 16gb RAM
    • 512gb SSD
    • 1080p touchscreen
    • Upgraded Wifi card

At some point I want to get a USB C hub to attach my external monitor, mouse, and keyboard to since the ports are quite tight, and it will be easier to just unplug the hub when taking it to class (if we end up being there physically often, since some of my classes are already online half the week 😢). I also need to get a decent mechanical keyboard since my external keyboard sucks. Although the keyboard on the laptop is fine I find myself accidentally pressing the wrong keys often.

I will also be getting a new phone at some point since my current one has a failing GPS and a screen that gets temporary burn-ins very easily after a few minutes of staying on the same screen.

On the software side of things, I opted to stay with Windows since I got this machine for college and I do not know what software I will need to use or if it has Linux alternatives. At some point it will definitely be switched since I am tired of constantly denying signing in to a Microsoft account every time I try to mess with settings or the Microsoft Store.

Hopefully you find in it the same joy that I do!

I am enjoying it a lot. The userbase is very nice (especially in the track review lobbies), and gives great constructive criticism. This may be a side effect of there being no real incentive to getting first and none for losing, or it could be since you have to have paid for the game to access chat. The only thing that has annoyed me was one time I got in a lobby where people kept voting map changes 10 seconds into the round. Left a sour taste in my mouth but luckily I didn't get put back in the same one after leaving.

    especially because they're so short

This does make it so easy to get trapped, and the track review rooms are even shorter at 3 minutes long!
