Anyone out there into FAST? (Free advertising-supported streaming TV)

I have a NVIDIA shield which runs Android TV and if you install apps like Tubi and Pluto the schedules all appear in the same interface. It’s a lot like a cable box or OTA with an absurd number of channels. You don’t see first-tier “prestige television” but you see lots of reruns of broadcast TV shows (like Star Trek) and cable shows (like My Cat From Hell) as well as local news from TV stations in various cities (maybe I am the only one but I like this) and anime (Sailor Moon and Hunter x Hunter with English subtitles, as well as recent Korean Isekai) and the old movies that that article talks about.

Even in sports there is an interesting offering that includes South American soccer and reruns of recent games and legendary old games of the NFL and MLB and combat sports, etc.

I think anybody who likes linear TV (I am a sucker for reruns of Columbo or Sliders or Farscape on off-brand OTA networks) would find something to like.

What do you think about FAST?

The regularity of Mandarin blows my mind. When you have grammatical agreement it isn’t the gender B.S. from French and German but how the “of” in a construction “<number> of <noun>” depends on if the noun is something long and thin, flat, or such. It feels to me like an artificial language such as

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlingua

which you might be able to read with some comprehension immediately because it is a cleaned up Latin.

I know I miss a lot but with the assistance I am doing as well at “reading a language I don’t know” as I’ve done for Spanish, Dutch, Czech, etc.

A friend of mine grows weed in New York (and is active in the trade association) and I’ve gone to his grow and he’s given me the lecture about how the first thing you should think about in the taxonomy of cannabis is the “flavoring” compounds like limonene, not the percentage of THC. On TV I’ve heard people from California dispensaries giving the same lecture.

We are taking care of someone’s chickens so my wife brings home a lot of eggs so I make open faced “breakfast sandwiches” a lot as well as tuna-fish sandwiches and similar. Sometimes I have them with butter and honey from our beehives which is also in great abundance at the moment.

I usually book hotels one to several days out on road trips so I can make changes of plan. I hate showing up in town and not knowing where to stay (if you are unlucky you can wind up searching a few places) so this is a good compromise.

If I am travelling solo or maybe one other person I am likely to try transit-based tourism, which is mainly about adding enough slack in your schedule.

I mentioned this book in another reply

    https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2012/05/24/book-review-why-love-hurts/

which does make the case (from a feminist standpoint) that women are right to be concerned about taking too long to find a partner because women's fertility is not infinite. It's not a matter of "my body my choice" but more a matter of the choice being made for you if enough time passes. Not like people have to have kids but it is something that most people find to be one of the most satisfying things they did in their life. Her opportunity is not lost at 32 but if she loses another 5 years here and another 5 years there it could be.

That's something entirely different from the pushy parents with traditional values or the Woody Allen types who might think 17 is getting too old.

talks about the “architecture of choice” in modern dating and why this strategy fails. Stendhal, in this classic

    https://www.gutenberg.org/files/53720/53720-h/53720-h.htm

describes the process of “crystallization”, that is the process of falling in love and how when you are head over heels for somebody you see that person as singular, unique and irreplaceable — pretty obviously looking at it as a numbers game where you have a choice of thousands and thousands of people will ensure that you never fall in love unless you quit playing the game. Illouz points that this is particularly hazardous for women because they can stay single for longer than they stay fertile.

Perhaps Meta wishes it did better, people really do buy and sell VR games on Meta’s store. Multiplayer experiences are a weak point, which particularly stands out because that is Meta’s strength in real life.
