Apple's entire device lineup is such a clusterfuck that it makes me worry they're just throwing things at the wall without knowing why. As of right now they sell four variants of the same device under different names, and the primary/only difference to casual observers is size. (How they resisted the urge to call the 12.9" Pro the "iPad Pro Max" I have no idea.) If they're not going to simplify the lineup, they should at least have a "story" for each device about who it's for and why, and they should be able to tell it without a side-by-side spec comparison chart.

Oh, plus they're ditching Face ID for Touch ID and they're only compatible with the first-generation Pencils, not the new ones. Were these supposed to come out in 2017? Incredible.

Killing doctors is an extreme example of harm, but it's not the only one. Harm is harassing and threatening their patients on the street. It's giving false medical information under the guise of "crisis pregnancy centers". It's defunding clinics that provide essential medical services because they also provide abortion services. It's trying to overturn Roe v. Wade. These are all ipso facto bad things. If pro-lifers want to avoid causing harm, they need to stop being pro-lifers.

Picture a guy telling a girl who didn't ask for his opinion, "Well ackshuallyyyy, feminists are the real sexists and that's why I'm not going to watch Captain Marvel," and you've identified the typical American millennial's perception of Redditors.

Neither side wants to inflict harm. They may be willing to inflict harm to protect another, but that is not the same as wanting to inflict harm.

I'm sure Doctors David Gunn, Barnett Slepian, George Tiller, and who knows how many others are resting easy knowing their murderers didn't want to inflict harm.

I'm not willing to give pro-lifers any points for supposedly having their hearts in the right place when they've decided lumps of tissue are more worthy of protection than living, breathing humans.

A couple years ago I was doing some digital housekeeping and found an old Yahoo email address I no longer used. I logged in to delete it, but found it'd recently received a notification that my MySpace credentials had been leaked in a security breach, which was odd since I could've sworn I'd deleted my account in like 2006. I followed the password reset instructions and realized it was for a music page with a couple songs I'd thrown together in FruityLoops back in the day. Interestingly, they had nearly 1,000 plays/downloads between them.

I didn't care enough to re-save them then so I'm not too broken up about them being gone now, but it was a nice thought that some stranger(s) in a forgotten corner of the internet had found music I'd made to be worth listening to. Who knows, maybe years from now they'll surface again on some random hard drive and be considered long lost artifacts of early 2000s electronic music.

Otherwise, RIP "Esprit de Corps", "Ghost Dancer", and "Cold Depths".

It might be of academic interest, but despite knowing nothing about your current state or goals I am still willing to stake any amount of money that on a practical level this is garbage of no practical use to you. Trying to perform some kind of alchemy to rice is not going to be more effective in breaking through your plateau than reevaluating your caloric balance.

Stick to CICO principles, and if you haven't made any adjustments since three months ago maybe it's time for your conservative-ish salads to become plain old conservative.

No, the ADL said it was a 4chan troll in May 2017. A lot has happened since then, but it's fair that they didn't understand how the alt-right operated yet (which isn't to say others paying attention weren't already picking up on it). But I'm certain even they'd be prepared to revise their article by now. Dozens of no-name schmucks with alt-right beliefs do it. Lauren Southern does it. Stephen Miller does it. Milo Yiannopoulos does it. Richard Spencer does it. The guy that just murdered fifty fucking people just did it. At what point does the "hoax" become real?

This tweet sums it up nicely, I think.

At any rate, I’m pretty interested. I spend a lot of time trawling for nifty wondrous items not geared towards combat and weapons that aren’t longswords, so if you’ve got a selection of those I’ll buy it.

It’s hardly just the United States; social democracies are getting pummeled all over the world. Brexiteers in the UK. AfD in Germany. Marine le Pen and the Gilet Jaunes in France. Law & Justice in Poland. The Five Star Movement and Lega Nord in Italy. Victor Orban in Hungary and Sebastian Kurz in Austria. Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. Narendra Modi in India and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil. Marian Kotleba is going to be President of Slovakia someday.

People everywhere, not just Americans, are losing faith in liberalism’s ability to make their lives better, and that trend is only going to accelerate as catastrophes pile up in the coming years. Centrist liberals who’ve spent the past few decades using graphs and charts to try to gaslight people into thinking everything is fine are being left in the dust as everyone realizes they’re wholly unprepared for the shit that’s already hitting the fan. And since those same centrists did their best to kill all semblances of a revolutionary left, fascists are the loudest voices left to tell people what they already know: the world’s on fire and the Hillary Clintons and Emmanuel Macrons and Angela Merkels of the world can’t stop it.

I’ve got a few things on the backburner:

    • A “gravity maze” iOS game, where you guide a ball through a circular maze by rotating the circle. It turns out designing increasingly difficult mazes that still fit on a phone screen is hard, so I’m focusing on the soundtrack and background color palettes to procrastinate.

    • Screenplay for a dark comedy series about a scientist with a black widow complex. To avoid getting caught for murdering her hookups, she figures out how to create clones that she can bang and kill without arousing suspicion. Wacky hijinks ensue. The elevator pitch is Santa Clarita Diet meets Dexter with clones.

    • Novel about an unambitious employee of a multinational construction contractor who, because he falsified his resume to say he speaks Armenian under the assumption no one would ever call him on it, gets sent to Armenia to negotiate a contract with their government after a fictional civil war. The war reignites immediately upon his arrival, leaving him to blunder his way out of a burning country he knows nothing about. On hold since 1) I realized it’s a borderline ripoff of Absurdistan by Gary Shteyngart and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, 2) I know nothing about Armenia, and 3) I’m lazy.

Edit: Can’t believe I forgot this other thing I just started writing notes on. Screenplay about a botanist who breeds plants that induces temporary amnesia and suggestibility in people exposed to their sap. He uses it to kidnap people, convince them to empty their bank accounts and max out their credit cards and whatnot, then drops them off somewhere once they’re bled dry. Then he accidentally exposes himself to the sap while he has a woman in his house he’s in the process of robbing. They don’t remember their own identities, but she remembers him telling her they were married, so they start piecing a false backstory together based on clues in the house as their real memories start to come back and get intertwined with the fake ones. Sort of like the “Morty’s Mind Blowers” episode of Rick & Morty.

I'll fight you over "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Israel's version is lovely, but this recording is such a pure expression of Garland's own heartache. The way she can barely hold herself together and takes twenty seconds of silence to collect herself is powerful stuff, especially if you're familiar with her life story.

It contradicts OP's article that says no one else was ever considered, but others are reporting that Waititi, Edgar Wright, and Phil Lord/Chris Miller were asked if they would step in and they all refused in solidarity with Gunn. Pretty cool if true.

Aside from the initial cave-in, he’s pretty much the exemplary case for how past insensitivity should be handled. Not by telling people to learn to take a joke, and not by banishing him forever. He apologized sincerely, he demonstrated growth, and he’s been welcomed back.

I am curious what a Taika Waititi Guardians movie would look like though.
