I’m by no means an expert on cats, but my advice would be if a cat comes to your back door, looking underweight and seemingly crying for food, don’t feed it unless you’re prepared to adopt it permanently. I’m definitely not complaining, but that’s exactly what happened to me last year and I appear to have been claimed by her.

I did recently watch this interesting documentary about cats and found it a great help to understand how to take better care of them.

Lars Von Triers films are incredible and very thought provoking, pieces of art. Melancholia is my favourite of his, but all of them are classics in their own right.

Antichrist is very brutal though, and incredibly gory. Some of the scenes are hard to watch.

But I do recommend everyone watch A Serbian Film because it’s unique in a very subversive way. I’d describe it as an action film on its face, but with a horrific plot twist.

Whereas Von Triers work is kinda artsy for arts sake at points and while totally unique, it can be hard to grasp what’s actually happening and far more open to interpretation.

A Serbian Film is very much rammed down your throat and not very ambiguous at all. Still thought provoking and interesting in what the limits of cinema should be.

    “We’ve got to collectivisize!!”

“But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs to the community!”

I’ve seen it so many times and realise a new silly thing every time.

“I threw that shit before I even came into the room” always cracks me up without fail.

I heard a while back they’re making a sequel, so hope it’s true and it delivers as much as the first!

I forgot to post about it in the cult classics thread, but Black Dynamite is maybe my favourite film of all time.

It’s not actually terrible, by any standard, so I guess I’m shoehorning it into this thread a bit, but it pokes fun of so many tropes from my favourite film genre of all time, Blaxploitation film.

It’s got everything you could possibly need in a hilarious film. Sex, Drugs, Violence, an incredible soundtrack, hilarious intentional bloopers, conspiracy and Kung Fu.

    Need I really say more?

I do this too, total hoarder in that respect. It doesn’t help when you’re the de facto tech guy for your friends and family. They’ll often give me things they no longer use if I fix a broken screen or get their pc running better again or something.

I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart. I’ve been tinkering recently trying to make a nice laptop of out broken and spare parts that I can take to cafes and learn programming there. I can’t remember the specs but it’s at least ten years old, but was top of the line back in the day so not completely unusable for my use case. Like you said in your post OP, new SSD and doubling the ram and it’s easily capable for running a web browser.

I played around with a few different distros, but settled on archcraft because I love the way it looks and I’m too lazy to really set up arch and maintain it when it breaks. It’s not doing a lot bar running a terminal, IDE and browser so spending hours setting it up and tinkering wasn’t something I could be bothered with. I can still learn the arch framework with it too and eventually might end up running that on my main pc, when I inevitably break something there.

This week, I restarted reading Chasing the scream by Johann Hari. I put it down a while back because it was making me incredibly depressed. It’s still kind of harrowing now, but more bearable having taken a step back, but in all honesty I’ve put it down a few times because some of the anecdotes are frankly shameful.

I don’t think I’ve ever audibly tutted or shook my head in disgust while reading a book so much.

As a brief summary, it is a thorough look on the war on drugs, starting in the prohibition era in America, leading up to the present day. A lot of the information you’ll may already be aware of in isolation; but the way that Hari stitches the narrative together is nothing short of disturbing. The ripples in time are laid bare and it has really left me perplexed quite a few times already.

It covers topics including racism and the prison industrial complex, but always pins it back to the main issue of human beings suffering.

I genuinely don’t think anyone could read this and be in favour of imprisonment of addicts.

Grief is a motherfucker. I lost someone close who truly struggled with addiction and ironically it hasn’t been until I’ve been through my own turmoil, I’ve fully understood what it must’ve been like to have been in their shoes. Hence the seeking for new perspectives, I guess.

Thank you for believing in me. If everyone behaved this way with complete strangers, who knows what incredible shit the entire world would be capable of!

Enjoyed dipping my toe into this over my morning coffee. I didn't hate it but agree with the sentiment, they’re undistinguishable from one another. Nothing really jumps out to me in the same way The Arcs latest album did, for example. Entirely different bands but it’s the first that sprang to mind.

Will re listen again once I’m less tired, but they’re one of my favourite bands so I think the bar is set quite high.

It makes more sense to me. I like ATB too, I think some companies still go with that. Can't remember off the top of my head though. But it reminds me of 90's MTB branding and makes them sound more machine-like, like motocross or something. I'd love to read the diary though. Focus on the content that you want to make firstly, or at the very least the stuff you'd like to see here, I'd say.

I just use Apple books, it's more important to me that I can pick up a book across all of my devices rather than the app having many bells and whistles. I like that I can upload my own to it and sync them so it remembers where I was. That's basically all I need from an e-reader. I've borrowed a friend's paperwhite and think they're great but being locked into the amazon jail is a no-go for me.

Thank you, I didn't want to make my post too much of a sob story, but you've just accurately described me right there.

I've never been one for self-help books, as the ones I've read previously have been a bit of a preachy slog. I feel like I'm definitely the target audience for this now though, as things have declined quickly recently.

Anyway, this will be the first of the many amazing recommendations in this thread that I will pick up today. Thanks again for sharing.

I didn't expect to see so many people commenting in favour of invite-only, but I disagree.

While it's nice now, I think when this site is considered somewhere close to finished, then having the most diverse possible user base is important to me, for the fair and balanced discussion I crave. I'm not really interested in yet another echo chamber.

I could be biased, because I am part of a lot of invite-only forums, so they could fill that void for me. While they're anything but an echo chamber, they're invite-only for pretty good reason. It's great to feel included and like you're part of something special, for sure. But the other forums I'm in get a little samey and predictable, with the same vocal minority always popping up to contribute.
