As a cyclist, I’d like at the bare minimum for people not to be aggressive towards us. I’ve been yelled at and nearly hit a couple of times.

I feel it helps playing on real hardware as well, nothing more nostalgic than cracking open my childhood GBA SP (well….after I modded the crap out of it)

Oh man that gave me shivers! This game was a huge part of my childhood. Perfect tease with the tram, I used to replay that section time and time again because the graphics were so amazing back then. Can’t wait to see the hive.

Oh and the sounds are spot on, can’t believe my memory flashbacks the sound as the tram spun around gave me.

Just gotta dig out my old Prima strategy guide!

Bouncing around a few games right now. Half way through the campaign of Advance Wars 1 and 2 hours into a new run of Pokémon Emerald. Advance Wars has been great, played with the map editor a lot as a kid but never got far into the campaign. Emerald is amazing as always.

Also playing some GT Advance 3 here and there which has been surprisingly fun. Love how the cars feel for a retro racer.

Used to be a plan the whole trip out day by day, live like the locals, cram in as much as possible type of guy. But a few years ago we tried out a resort, and to be honest it was really relaxing to do 0 planning beyond booking the resort, then sit down with concierge when we arrived and book trips for the week. Especially now with a kid, I need as easy as possible.

Finally landed on a design I was happy with for my personal portfolio. Decided to just fully embrace my inner geek and styled the site after the 80s computer magazine “Compute!”. Still some things to tweak in the future, but had a ton of fun researching 80s design trends and reading old Compute! issues.

Built the site with NextJS, Vercel, Typescript, Framer Motion and TailwindCSS. 100% overkill but hey it’s a portfolio!

My town in Ohio hosted a small festival for the event. Ride bikes with the family, hung out at the brewery and listened to the DJ while watching the sun do its thing. Was a ton of fun! We only had a few seconds of totality, but it was incredible! The atmosphere was amazing as well, people were cheering as totality hit, and there was a fire juggler that added a cool contrast to the sudden darkness.

As a fellow cyclist, absolutely love this post. It really captures the “why” behind cycling. I got REALLY into cycling last year when we moved somewhere along multiple trails. Since then I’ve probably gone a little too far down the path (spandex, bike computer, speed/cadence/heart rates sensors, etc), but my love for the sport remains the same. There’s nothing like an open road/path, blue skies, small towns and plenty of cafes. The fact that I get a ton of exercise from it is even better!

I’ve also observed like you that people are a lot more friendly in the countryside. When I discovered London, Ohio (a small town along the Ohio-Erie), I got to talk to so many people at the cafe. They’d just pull up a chair and start chatting with you! I also love the camaraderie among cyclists. The wave on the path, the chat in the coffee shop. It’s a great community!

I’m planning to do half of the Ohio-Erie trail (which has a trailhead a 30 minute ride from my house) this spring, and the whole trail by the end of summer. It’s been so much fun training and getting ready for the trip, and I still have a lot to do! My longest ride so far has been about 40 miles, and I need to get to about 60 miles a day. Now that it’s warming up though, I can really ramp my training back (indoor just isn’t as fun).

The seating issue is a solved problem, Japanese trains have seats that rotate, so they just spin them around to face forward. Wonder why the didn’t just go with this approach?

I had my first chamber of commerce meeting since I incorporated my software agency, also had a IxDA meetup and a number of client calls. Overall a good week for networking! But unfortunately came down with something that's knocked me on my butt the past 2 days. Hoping I recover quickly, it's supposed to be nearly 70F on Sunday and I'd love to get ~50 miles in on the bike.

I used to run MetaShort, a link shortener that allowed one to change the title/description/image that show up when you share a link on social media. While it was used by a lot of legitimate users (especially my paying customers), it obviously attracted many nefarious users as well (think changing the the summary of a news article while keeping the legit URL).

While I tried to keep up with scrubbing out bad actors, I eventually got blacklisted by Twitter, which basically killed the service. I probably should have followed the authors direction and restricted it to paying users only.

Can’t read the article, but I have transitioned towards more physical media recently. With streaming services being mostly terrible and expensive these days, it’s much easier to buy a DVD or BluRay from my local used store, or rent new releases from the library. I have 0 interest in paying to “own” a digital file.

I think it's more of teaching a way of thinking and problem solving. Not only does it improve your technical proficiency (which I believe is extremely important), but you learn a way of designing solutions, logically implementing your solution, and patiently debugging it. These skills are important regardless of future profession!
