Thanks for this post, for some reason I’ve always thought this was some old Google watch. Cool to learn it’s OSS.

Just did some digging it seems Pebble filed for insolvency in 2016, and what acquired by Fitbit. Google then purchased Fitbit in 2021.

I only use LibreOffice, it's the only option besides Microsoft Office. Everything other then LibreOffice Writer is hot garbage though. I recently had to give a presentation so I used LibreOffice Impress, which lacks the auto style recommendations of Powerpoint. It was a pain, taking over a day to make an attractive slideshow. I'm proud of the end result but I shouldn't have to spend so much time. Writer doesn't make me miss Word, but Impress makes me see the gaps. Some form of local algorithm would help...

This feels like such a nothing argument to me. It's the parents who decide to have a child based on their own thoughts and desires. Acting like the parents' feelings shouldn't be priority to the existence of a yet to exist child is such a reddit well actually response.

Sure, you say it's dehumanizing, the child doesn't even hypothetically exist.

I vote for having a child for three reasons. 1) It is deeply rewarding and having the sweetest, cutest, smartest person to come home to everyday is the best thing in the world. Who they are at such a young age is amazing and I cannot wait to see them grow. 2) As I aged I began to care about genealogy, as all my work really is tracking historical people anyways, this became deeply personal. I would be very sad if my lineage died with me. 3) The world has always had its problems both interpersonal and global. I can never understand anti-natalism.

Having a child is hard without a proper support system. I wanted two prior to having one, now I'm not sure I could handle 0-3 months again.

I’ve always been interested it from that gamer YouTube with an owl icon (who has since been outed as very toxic to their friends)—they described it as life changing and to play it before watching the video. I played a good amount but felt like I was heading in no direction. Don’t see anything life changing.

Playing Titanfall 2 again on Linux, runs really well and is such a fun game. I really think they were genius with making it a short game and saving the best fun for the end. Also I noticed something goofy in the first mission. When you take over the dead pilot’s Titan and go burry the pilot framing it as an emotional background, the background is littered with your friends. Why burry this dude you don’t know but leave everyone else lol

I read a book in late elementary school that seems to be very similar to Spud but I swear was somewhat more graphic. I remember the protagonist going to boarding school, mixed up with a lot of girls, and things became more sexually explicit sometimes. It was an influential book for me. I just reread Spud and though I think it could be spud I really think it’s a different book :(

Love getting collaterals in CS or an ace. Simply being where they least expect you is a joy.

Warthunder is most fun outmaneuvering others especially shooting only with guns.

I don’t get why micro editor control shift up selects everything rather than just the paragraph you’re on. That’s what nano does.

Putting Fedora to sleep often results in a black screen when you wake it, even worse on laptops.

I just submitted a paper and LibreOffice’s format showed up as a mess for the editors. That’s not acceptable.

LibreOffice impress is hot garbage. What takes an hour in office takes a day in impress.

Happy with Linux but a handful of dumb issue that shouldn’t work this way.

I've recently been finding the internet more and more boring as well. I think it started with realizing how bad Reddit was as a company and then as a community through their API choices. Reddit is extremely toxic. This paired with my interest in running servers and FOSS made me move to other options such as Lemmy and Mastodon, but frankly the "Fediverse" is boring and cringe, not just in the naming.

YouTube and TikTok both have a lot of fun and informational material but at the end of the day who cares, it's too addicting for the actual thing you gain.

So what's left? There some interesting blogs, Lobsters can be interesting, tildes appears interesting. I've tried index IRC's and shoutboxes but they're mostly racist or mean. I think it's just time to get off the internet. The novel, interesting content feels to be running out and replaced by mean people, corporate interests, and bots.

Better to pick up a book or actually talk to someone.

This is a very fun question, thank you!

I have Pokemon Red and Green Rom copied from my cartridges, that's 1996. I have a drunk family video from my parents 1997, which is very fun. I also somehow still own the moonshine from that evening. The oldest photo file I have from my own hands is 2008. I keep all of these because they're of family value and childhood fun.

If handwriting counts as a file, I have some class notes from Meiji 29/1895. I have an original photograph from late 19th century and a sketch from prior to photographs, maybe mid 19th century, both of my family. Also, family and research related.
