Initial D. What do you think?
A few months ago I saw a bunch of memes about drift racing and it turned out that was from a rather old anime. As a moderate fan of street racing I decided to check it out, and really enjoyed it. The idea of using talent to casually push an old "sleeper" car (but a nice looking one) beyond others is fun and inspiring. The dynamic racing scenes were done beautifully. Iconic eurobeat soundtrack. And surprisingly nice friendships and relationships in a "daily life" yet captivating story. Watching the show was a memorable experience for me, and it was also fun to recognize songs and phrases from the memes and to learn more about racing. And what do you think?
Initial D is a classic. Love all of it.
Please don't call Initial D a classic, I'm trying not to feel old here :P
I remember the day I watched the first 3 episodes of the first series and thinking "cool... I'll watch the entire series for sure". Twenty years later, and that's all I ever watched.
I loved it, it got me in to other animes that deal with skills/sports and becoming the best at them. It drags on a bit towards the end, but that may just be because I've rewatched it 3 or 4 times now.
I watched it a year or so ago, after hearing the soundtrack everywhere I figured the Anime had to be good if the soundtrack was so solid. When I finally got round to watching it I ended up binge watching the entire series, it was really entertaining, lots of awesome characters, a solid soundtrack and a relaxing 90's style. Glad I watched it.
It has a lot of problems, but god damn do I love the Eurobeat soundtrack and ridiculous racing tactics that are used to justify a 10 year old (at the time) Corolla beating 300+ horsepower sports cars.
I never watched the anime, but the arcade game based on Initial D was a huge hit in Malaysia in the early 2000s. The game pops out a player card, so you can continue progress across machines and end up with a neon aura undercarriage, among other upgrades! Here's a YouTube video of someone drifting perfectly through the mountain pass.
