What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
I started watching Little Witch Academia. I haven’t seen a ton of anime (just Deathnote, which I loved). LWA is really over the top silly/funny, but I’m cool with that. It’s good for the indoor bike, which is where I do all my solo TV watching.
Started watching the final season of Attack on Titan. I'm pretty sure I won't remember the various details and plot threads very well from where they left off last season, but I mean, I'm not gonna not watch it.
I've been watching Master Keaton since June last year, with an episode here and there. I'm at halfway now - I saw episode 20 of 24 on Sunday, with the extra 15 episodes to come when I get through those. It's a decent episodic seinen... the writing is sometimes a bit light but it's still interesting enough to keep me engaged. Maybe I expected more than it promised, but it's a dependable watch to have in reserve when I feel like watching anime but don't want to spend 30 minutes trawling through all the too-dumb/too-silly/too-heavy/too-whatever options. Also, the English dub is good, though some of the various UK or European accents are bad stereotypes and a little funny as a result.
I've also started watching the Patlabor Early Days OVAs and have been surprised by how much I've enjoyed it halfway through. It's more about the characters so far than the mechs, which makes it a lot more palatable to me. I also know that late '80s/early '90s anime tend to hit the sweet spot for me in terms of emotional tone and maturity. If I could get a series with '80s-style character design sensibilities, personality, and humor, with modern-day animation and plot, I'd probably have my perfect show.
I started with AoT as well, and couldn't remember almost anything off the bat. Previous season was far too crowded with important story points.
So I just read synopsis on wikipedia to get up to speed :)
I’ve been reading Dr. Slump by Akira Toriyama, the guy from Dragonball. The story of a scientist who creates a human like robot that looks like a little girl and knows nothing about the world. She’s sweet, nice and super strong – like young Goku. The Portuguese fan version I found leaves a lot to be desired, it’s easy to spot terrible mistranslations. It doesn’t help that most projects, either professional and fan-made, use English as a source.
I also downloaded Dragonball in what seems to be a scan of the official Portuguese version, which is much better. I only enjoy Goku as a child so I don’t plan to read further than that. It’s as funny as Dr. Slump but there are major arcs going on so that’s more engaging.
Just finished reading Alice in Borderland.
