    Akudama Drive
This show aims to be a fun action anime and it achieves it really well. The animation itself is really well done. The story serves its purpose well, setting up cool action sequences without getting too convoluted. The characters are fun and unique, I do appreciate

Spoiler shows that aren't afraid to kill of main characters.
This show's one cour served it really well, the pacing felt snappy and the plot didn't really require any exposition dumps.

    My Girlfriend is a Gal
I was looking for a show that required less than like 30% brainpower and this did the trick. I generally prefer dubs over subs, and I have heard this show's dub is an improvement, so I imagine other peoples experience with this was different. If this show was just the main couple it would be pretty good. It focuses on a high school boy with unrealistic and oversexualized expectations about dating a 'Gal', which I guess is a western equivalent of a valley girl. The story isn't really anything to write home about, but it's cute, and the comedy is actually pretty good. What kills this show is the rest of the ensemble. Maybe harem anime's aren't for me, but every other character is so unlikable. The MCs friends lean heavy on the pervert shtick, while the women creepily obsess over the MC for the first half of the show. Overall it's a trashy anime with a cute pairing at its core.
    Neon Genesis Evangelion
So years after dropping Eva and saying it was boring, I decided to watch it in full. Boy was I wrong.
I will say the first ten or so episode, which I watched before, are pretty meh without the context of the ending. With the mecha scenes being pretty unengaging and the creepy stuff with Rei, Mistao ends up being the only likeable character for these episodes.
After Asuka gets introduced the characters start to finally feel like they have some chemistry. Shinji isn't just moping around, there's building tension around the larger conspiracy, and you start to see the psychological/philosophical themes that end up making this show compelling.
The last 6 episodes are what made me realize why this is a classic. The show telegraphs it's themes and makes me feel dumb for not realizing they were there in the first place. Giving characters realistic reasons for why they are the way they are is incredibly hard to do, and this show pulls it off so well. The characters backstories are traumatic without feeling forced. I do like how the show ending is much more positive that the movie's, it leaves a nice tinge of hope to on with all the melancholy.
Lastly the movie, End of Evangelion. This movie basically changed how I looked at the entire series overall and without it I don't think I would give it as much credit as I do now. As a psychology nerd the movie's use of themes made this the first piece of media I've found it interesting to develop theories for. Shinji and Asuka's Oedipus/Electra complex made inspecting character motivation a lot more interesting and made me want to look back at the series as a whole. I find the theory that the characters represent psychoanalytical drives really compelling and really justifies my view that psychoanalytic works way better as a philosophical framework than a psychological one.
Overall, I was so wrong, this show is great. It has left a hole in my heart that no anime has yet to fill, and I both do and don't want to rewatch it.
