This essay is a couple of years old at this point, but since it has been published I've read the whole thing a couple of times. It is a masterful meditation on imperfection, which manages to weave in a fair amount of art history. It is a long one, but if you don't have time to read it now I recommend bookmarking it and coming back to it. This essay won the National Magazine Award (also known as an "Ellie") in 2017 in the category of Essays/Criticism (tangentially, if you want a good list of reading, check out the wiki page for past winners).

I modified the title so it was not overly long.
