I've gotten to meet Karen Russell a few times, and she's one of the most genuinely nice people in the literary world I've come across. She's also a rock star in the literary fiction world, with her debut novel being a Pulitzer finalist and her winning the MacArthur Genius Grant.

In this article, she discusses the difficulty of even a writer at her level of success putting together a functional life when it comes to balancing work, family, and finances.

I'm a big proponent of anyone discussing further how being an artist without basically working two full-time jobs or having a trust fund / high earning spouse is insanely difficult, though this article is a little lacking in details (she kind of breezes over what she did with the MacArthur money).

If you'd like to read my favorite short story by her, here's "St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" in PDF form from a shady looking URL I found on Google: https://1.cdn.edl.io/PNYONEfw15WBM6xTjqiCnP8sH3lKkHsH4bIy5kvG7GZfeByR.pdf
