Over pandemic, I took up "small scale gold and mineral prospecting" up as a hobby. Haven't really found much to speak of yet, but it's really fun and there's a bunch of YouTubers to follow. I'm looking at buying my first high-banker sometime in the Spring maybe. Right now I just have a basic panning set, but it's still a lot of fun and if you do it on a small scale it doesn't really have a negative effect on the environment other than disturbing a little bit of soil/sediment around creekbeds.

I remember seeing an extended interview/mini-doc about a guy that did "urban prospecting" in NYC some years ago, by picking up gold and jewels he found on the street as well as sifting/panning sidewalk dust/dirt. I believe it was his primary source of income and did pretty well.

It's not as popular a profession as it once was, but being a tosher has a long history of being a decent paying job.
That documentary sounds very interesting. I'm going to try and find that.
