I'm very nervous about this. Over the last few decades the UK has avoided building nuclear power because our of green lobby and our nuclear power stations are slowly shutting down. We burn gas and coal to generate over 50% of our electricty. Around 35% of our coal comes from Russia and around 60% of our gas comes from Norway.
There are fears that our gas supply will be reduced as the rest of Europe seeks to replace their Russian gas imports. We're not a member of the EU, and EU countries introduced export bans during the covid crisis, so it's quite likely that we'll be cut off or have our imports restricted.
Thanks to our government closing our domestic gas storage, we don't store much gas in the UK so any interruptions to imports will lead to blackouts very quickly. There are now plans to reopen our domestic storage but it looks like it will only be able to hold around half of its original capacity (roughly six days worth) by winter.
In the UK most homes are heated by gas, not electricity, so any interruption to gas will be much, much worse than just power outages.

It took me a while to realize that EDF sounded familiar to me because of the Red Faction games…
