Correct me if I'm wrong but, single-use plastics by humans is a mere drop in the ocean compared to industrial/commercial waste. Or was that just limited to straws? (of which single-use paper straws wrapped in a plastic packaging wasn't much of a solution...). As much as I love being Canadian this is a real weak move...

Last I heard, nothing is really getting recycled at this point because Canada doesn't have the capacity to do their own recycling and China recently stopped accepting.

On the other hand, France's ban on dumping unused consumer goods seems much more effective in the grand scheme of things. Prevention is more effective than the cure.
