I think it's a natural part of the grieving process. I was there not that long ago, I was against having children and such. I got through, and now I'm really sick of the "omg humanity is doomed" comments I frequently see on Reddit. Now I think a bit differently. We're not Job, we're not at the mercy of a cruel God. We are God. People like to fantasize about the extinction of humanity. They're wrong, there will always be people on or near this planet for the next millennia. We will decide who that is, how many there are, where they are, and how comfortable they are. To anyone who's still in despair: there will always be a place for people, accept that things are going to get shitty and look beyond it. There's a future there, and it won't be a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Stop crying and become involved, at the very least vote, ride a damn bike, and treat meat like a luxury.

I think that despair is fully justified. I've not eaten meat for the past 30 years. I vote. I try to minimize my car use, I recycle and compost. I've volunteered in several environmental organizations. I donate to these causes and to candidates pushing for these causes.
I don't feel I have any control in where we're heading. While we're the God, it seems like we have acted and keep on acting quite irresponsibly regardless of how many of us protest, or that the vast majority of us thinks things need to change. We simply do not have the capacity to influence change and time is running out.
While we'll get to decide how many of us remain in the next millennia, do you think your kids are going to be on that list? Do you think they have the political and financial clout? This isn't a hypothetical for you - as an expecting father, it is a question I keep asking myself every day. Have I doomed my kid to a life of misery?

That's where we disagree. We are not God, modern robber barrons and charlatans are. We have given the power over us to the people that are the least suited for the job. People that care only about themself instead of putting everyone else in-front of them, as a good leader does. And I'm not talking about the US only. I'm not american. It's like this practically everywhere. The ones wielding power are the least suited to do so, if we take the perspective of the good of all, and it will continue to be so as long as we celebrate personal gain above everything else.

Humanity is not doomed, but we certainly are.
