Harding (the unhappy man) has definitely spent a lot of time on this, documenting the trees that were cut, but the responses from the multiple officials responsible for the park make it clear that it's very reasonable to try to make the park safer (given that it's one of the most dangerous in the country), and part of that is trail management. Given that the author couldn't find a single other person who expressed concern about this issue, this seems like a non-issue.

Separately, healthy trees are felled all the time because they're in some way problematic for the human use of the space. It's not a tragedy. If whole groves were being clearcut that might be a different issue, but it's clear that this was selective removal even based on Harding's own complaint that not all identical trees were felled.
