Coal mining jobs are at an all time low point in the last 100 plus years. Despite Trump's claims that we are going to "bring back coal" there is decreasing demand for it both in the US and abroad, particularly with the rise of natural gas in the US.
Even if coal were coming back, the jobs are not. Coal mining has increasingly moved to strip mining which requires far less workers than sending men down into a mine.
It is incredibly frustrating to me that rather than helping these folks find new careers amd opportunities, the Republocam party is pandering to a minority of voters and holding out hope for them that the glory days of our past could come back.
I mean, we need coal for steel. There will always be some coal jobs. But the idea that whole communities will be sustained by the coal industry like in the early 20th century is just ludicrous.
