I'm glad this is making its way back into society. Under the right conditions, psychedelics can have a benefit. I think the key here is the right conditions:

The first wave of research ended abruptly when hallucinogens left the laboratory and became identified with the counterculture of the 1960s ...

The psychologist Timothy Leary, who was fired from the Harvard faculty for providing psychedelic drugs to undergraduates, saw the drugs as a way to fix society’s ills. "Turn on, tune in, drop out," ... . Many did, and they found that, outside of a secure setting, drugs like LSD and mescaline could lead to "bad trips," causing intense feelings of anxiety and despair.

I've had my experiences with psychedelics, and conditions are extremely important. I've good and bad experiences, and read about plenty of nightmare experiences. Conditions are usually large contributor to trips gone bad.

I have no issues with recreational usage of marijuana, but I am not sure I would ever recommend legalization to the extent of recreational use for these substances. There is simply too much that can go wrong, and it is difficult to respond appropriately without someone (or experience) to help you through it. In all honesty, I wouldn't trust the average person to use these responsibly. Trips aren't like getting high - they're full blown experiences. The intensity doesn't increase linearly with dosage, and if you cannot handle the intensity, it can be tormenting.

That said, so glad MAPS has gained as much traction as it has. Changing the public perception of these drugs is so important because it's been demonized quite successfully. Most people are afraid of these substances, and although a healthy dose of caution is paramount, I think they should be viewed as a tool to utilizing the brain and introspecting in ways that aren't otherwise possible. I probably wouldn't be the person I am without some of the experiences I've had through these.

Lets not forget that while these human trials are taking place real people are legally being given life changing help. That's enough to make the entire thing worth it.
