Is there anyone here who is interested in upholstery as a hobby? If so, we'd love to hear about it! What's your favourite fabric to use?

My upholstery hobby is a fulfilling and creative outlet that allows me to revive old furniture and give it a fresh, stylish look. My favorite fabric to use is velvet. Its luxurious texture and rich colors add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any piece. Velvet not only looks stunning but also feels incredibly soft and comfortable

I wish I did. I just redid the back deck of our runabout boat - its about 3 ft x 6 ft. I rebuilt the waterlogged wooden base and could put on the foam but when it came to the tears in the multi-color vinyl covering, I was at a loss. For now a bit of glue and Gorilla tape will have to do. The local shop quoted me $1200 to redo it properly. Ouch.

I've reupholstered almost every piece in my home. I have a pair of armless chairs I got from World Market where I used a fuschia velvet for the seat, a pair of beaded pillows I took apart for the seat back and lime green piping to tie it all together.

I have a sofa I bought during the 90s and have reupholstered it twice. It looks like a cartoon sofa. Right now it's a vivid peacock blue velour.

I once took a channel back chair found by the side of the road, fixed and refinished the wooden arms, then covered it in a crazy colored splash patterned upholstery grade cotton. We called it the wacky chair and everyone who stopped by wanted to take it home.

We love love love color. This is the best way besides painted walls to really amp up the vibrancy on a room.

This may be a dumb place to ask this question, but I don't really know of anywhere else. Is there a kind of upholstery stitch I can use when I don't have access to the back of something? I am restoring an old corvette, and rather than buying all new dash pieces I am trying to vinyl wrap the old ones. But on a few there is a line of decorative stitching on top of a solid piece of plastic and/or plastic. I assume this was done originally by stitching the cover before it was put on, but I'm not super confident in my ability to get that to lay straight when I wrap parts.

Anyone have any ideas? Or terms I could google?

When I got my dog, she took a random piece of thick fabric and a couple pieces of foam and built us a dog bed. It took her ten minutes.

It's a great skill to have. Congratulations on your hobby.
