Anyone play an instrument as a hobby?
I'm currently learning how to play the violin I started about 2 weeks ago and really like it so far!
I noticed my G string's fine tuner was not quite working so I removed tension off the string to fix the screw--when I re-added tension I ended up breaking my string. This gave me an excuse to buy some nice starter strings! I can't wait to start playing on them I'm still waiting a few hrs to let them "settle in" on their own.
I play bass guitar and drums, though living in an apartment the past few years has restricted me to my electric kit. I used to semi-occasionally play gigs around my city with a two-piece band a buddy and I formed way back. We were terrible, but playing on stage was always a great time.
I used to also play saxophone and trumpet, and have been meaning to get back into it.
I would really love to learn violin, but I worry I don't have the time to commit to it right now. How are you finding it so far?
That's cool you used to play bass and drums for city gigs! I want to get decent enough to play for people such at old folk homes or some places that they want a free musician :D
It's really not too bad all you need is maybe 30 minutes a day and you will see some progress!
I'm seeing a teacher every week though so I think seeing a teacher for maybe a few months would be a good start so you can get a good foundation and remove any bad practices.
We had the benefit of living in a city with a lively music scene, so we were able to book at crummy dive bars pretty easily.
I may look into cheap violins, can't ever have too many instruments I suppose!
Side note: If you end up disappointed with the sound of a cheap violin, don't blame yourself. In my experience, you unfortunately have to fork over a significant amount of money ($1000+) to get a good-sounding violin. Of course, you can still have lots of fun with an instrument that isn't the epitome of sonic beauty. Good luck!
Any tips for a beginner on the bass?
I'm far from an expert, but I mostly learned what I know through online resources like Scott's Bass Lessons and basslessons.tv. There's a lot of beginner-friendly content there that'll help you learn the fundamentals. To keep practice fun, find some songs you like with easy bass lines and learn them, then play along with the songs.
Thank you for the links, I'll check them out. I haven't bought the bass yet, I'll get it from a friend, but in the meantime I'm making mental notes of what songs I'll want to play along to lol
I play piano, saxophone, and bass. Never been much good but I enjoy it.
We have the same skill set, minus the bass :).
What kind of piano pieces do you play?
I don't really have a set style. If I hear something I like I'll try play it. Next on my list is the piece from To the Moon (https://youtu.be/9QfPDmzpC2Q) and Chopin's Nocturne 20 in C-sharp minor (https://youtu.be/_hyAOYMUVDs). What about you?
I'm more or less the same. I'm attracted to styles like the To the Moon that you linked. (Which I am now listening to while studying hehe)
You should try the game To the Moon. It's a nice relaxed game for downtime.
