    In Brazil, when people think about black culture, they usually think about samba, pagode, and candomblé. Blackness is associated with extraversion, dancing, and party. We'll, I'm not this kind of black, so when I heard of black Muslim slaves in Bahia I was immediately drawn to it. They spoke Arabic and valued introspection. The Malê Revolt was their attempt to cease control of society and their own lives.
