The US has been saying that Europe needs to be more responsible for it's own defense for decades. NATO members are supposed to spend 2% of their GDP on defense, but only 5 member nations regularly meet that requirement. I don't say that as a jab at our European allies, but if they want NATO to be more European centric and take a more active role in their own defense, I don't expect there will be any complaints from the US.
