despite the title, this article actually raises a couple of interesting points, at least to me. like, this here:

You might be wondering why all this matters. We know that an AI virtual assistant is not the same as a real, living, breathing woman. Except that a study last year found that children regarded digital assistants as part of the family; and they are, as one father famously wrote, perfectly capable of turning your child into “a raging asshole”. “I’m not sure a kid gets why you can boss Alexa around but not a person,” he wrote. It’s Hegel’s master-slave dialectic, and your two-year-old is into it. I wonder how many mums out there are being barked at to the extent that they feel they might as well be digital assistants.

The research firm Gartner predicts that, as early as 2020, many people will have more conversations with digital assistants than they will with their spouse, and perhaps this could be a good thing. The sexist, unreconstructed men who love to be waited on get their fantasy servants; and women are liberated from the emotional labour, at least, of having to listen to them. We can crack on with changing the world, bringing about global peace, even having a fair go at equal representation in the technology sector. And yet we all know this utopian dream will not come to pass. Sex robots are already a thing. Just wait until the 88% male AI workforce take digital assistants and combine the two.

is a pretty interesting point of discussion coming from an opinion piece titled "I tried to sexually harass Siri, but all she did was give me a polite brush-off." we don't really think about kinda little things like this that much when we use technology, but there are all sorts of new, weird dynamics that are being formed by technological steps like this just becoming normal, everyday shit to people. i imagine if my family suddenly had a virtual assistant (even though we have no use for one at all), that would change the dynamics of how we live significantly.
