      It's pretty common these days for News orgs to A/B test various titles, watch the metrics to see which draw the most clicks/traffic, monitor social media to see if any stir up controversy they...

      I'm not sure why they do that so frequently.

      It's pretty common these days for News orgs to A/B test various titles, watch the metrics to see which draw the most clicks/traffic, monitor social media to see if any stir up controversy they would rather avoid (or might benefit from), and adjust their final title decision accordingly. The URL slug is usually the best way to determine what their original, primary title was, since they don't often change those for fear of breaking people's links to the article.
