I listened to Wormwood - The Star from a post on last week's "What have you been listening to?" by @elcuello.

I agree with their statement about genres. If you just look at the genre listed on the band's Metal Archives page you'll be disappointed, because when you think "melodic black metal" you'll go in half-expecting to hear a Dissection clone. Listening to it my brain hears more "atmospheric black" influences because of the buildup throughout each song and the album as a whole. In short, good mix between harsh and clean vocals (additional clean female vocals at times), great black metal guitar tone, solid drumming that isn't overplaying, and a clear distinction between songs. I've put it on my "To Buy" list.

In detail, what I really enjoyed about this album are things like:

    • Guitar solos! Too often black metal just focuses on establishing the mood, but nothing beats a good guitar solo in a song.
    • The second track, A Distant Glow, surprised me with the main riff. I thought the chord progression was going to follow a typical pattern; I don't know if I was expecting I-V-vi-IV exactly because I'm just a stupid drummer who can't tell A sharp from B flat so I could be way off, but I figured it'd be a progression like what we've all heard before. Not only did it stay in the lower range but it also extended another four bars before repeating. Something unexpected like that keeps me listening.
    • Several times throughout the album it sounded like they went into a major key. Again, I have no ear and somebody who actually knows music theory may scoff at me, but this was also a nice surprise. Most bands like to stay in minor keys because it's sad and foreboding and grim, but this provided punctuation of an uplifting moment, of perhaps a glimmer of hope amidst the sorrow. I didn't follow along with the lyrics to see if that was the point. Again, unexpected things that intrigue me.

Overall, thank you @elcuello, this sparks joy and I'll be listening to it again.
