No offence to OP, but this is the sort of thing I dislike on /r/Music and don't want to see on tildes too. Everyone, and I mean everyone has heard this song, and for several months you couldn't escape from it. Just this YouTube video alone has more views than the US has people. If we're going to share music here, I think we should share stuff that there's a good chance people haven't heard yet - either because it's new, because it's somewhat obscure, or because it's old. An engineered for radio pop song from a few years back is none of these things!

I actually like Levels but I think I’d much rather find new music through users posting it as it would also allow me to give first impressions and also thank the user for showing me the new music.

I'd like to split a balance between /r/Music and /r/listentothis. Mainstream and well known music isn't inherently bad, and even music that is popular in one genre might be worth posting if it hasn't seen much attention outside of its 'core demographic', so to speak. However, /r/Music posts suffer from the fate of most of its posts falling into just a few categories:

        • Meme songs (fucking Toto!)
        • Musician who recently died
        • Stuff from the 70s and 80s that everyone is familiar with, and in the case of Reddit's core demographic, probably grew up with because their parents played it. Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, etc.
        • 'Reddit-rock': a nebulous and hard to define brand of white guy music that we're all familiar with. Tonnes of Radiohead, R.E.M, Tame Impala, Wilco etc.

I like all this music - but I want to hear different stuff too.

So you’re saying there should be a set criteria each song has to reach in order to be posted? If so what do you think the criteria should be?

I'll throw in another voice towards avoiding popular music. /r/music serves that purpose. /r/listentothis tries to be a counterpart but has gotten too big to be an effective source for underground...

My ideal ~music taste level looks somewhat like /r/listentous (note the us) looked like once upon a time. Let's keep ~ rocking the weird soundwaves and not the same stuff everyone's heard!

I agree, I think I would prefer if the music tilde was more focused on finding new music. Not that I don’t like seeing a piece of music I already know being posted, but chances are I won’t listen to it as I’ve already heard it before. New songs on the other hand I will actively listen to as I love discovering new music.
