Roy Hargrove will always be part of my greatest jazz memory. 1993 at Smalls, my first ever night in a NYC jazz club. Brad Mehldau was playing. Hargrove and Peven Everett walked in off the street and sat in with the band. The ensuing trumpet battle blew my hair back. It was as if Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown had come back to life. It was so swinging, so intense. I didn't know what hit me. Hargrove stayed afterwards to lead the late night jam session. Jimmy Lovelace was the drummer. They played the fastest Cherokee I have ever heard in my life. Hargrove killed it. I stayed till sunrise; Hargrove was still there jamming. One of the best nights of my life.
