The story goes that he walked into the woods, and came out about ten minutes later with the complete song. Many great songs seem to have been written very quickly, in flashes of inspiration.
I'm not sure I'd put Umbrella in the same category of something like Ohio, or its B-side, Find the Cost of Freedom, but its commercial success can't be denied.
