For anyone interested in the earliest jazz history, Don Marquis's book about Buddy Bolden can't be beat. It compiles literally everything we know about his life. A good companion piece is "Louis Armstrong's New Orleans," another book that takes a look at Bolden and his successors, all important influences on Armstrong (and therefore all of jazz.)
