This seems presumptuous of Berman's faith — pinning meaning to his lyrics where authorial intent may not match. Though, maybe his lyrics are so resonant because listeners can ascribe many meanings to them. I know this can be said of all lyrics, but I think it's particularly the case with the cryptic, highly allusional form that Berman's writing takes. Either way, it's a moving elegy to Berman's death and the death of faith in modern American Judaism.

The quoted passage from Leonard Cohen was particularly interesting, as I was unaware he had been so enmeshed in the culture wars circumscribing modern Judaism.
