I wholeheartedly agree with the article's end statement. You can't build a good consumer offering if you design the offering like you hate the consumer, and I'm glad the labels got over themselves.
A thought, though. If today's streaming music scene is, as the article says, "the right path": why aren't any of the streaming services making a profit? It seems to me like a monetization model propped up by venture capital is doomed to collapse eventually. When that happens, what's going to take its place? Might we see Bandcamp, with its pay-what-you-want direct-to-artist model, take up the reigns? Or will we enter another anything-goes battle royal? If accompanied by a similar giant tech jump like the internet, this seems like the most likely scenario..
