I'm in the market for a cassette deck, as strange as that sounds in 2021. I found this article while doing some research. My takeaway is: buy refurbished vintage gear. Unlike turntables, the knowledge base for making quality cassette decks has mostly been lost.

The youtube channel Techmoan has quite a few videos about cassette players, including a video about this mechanism. He's recently posted a review of this boombox, claiming it's the last half-decent cassette player still available new today. Vintage hifi gear is still probably your best bet though. From watching Techmoan's videos you can also get an idea of how to refurbish these things yourself. Most of the time it's just a matter of replacing some belts, maybe some capacitors.

Ooh, thanks for the links. Lots of interesting looking stuff on that channel. I'll have to dig in. Although I'm pretty lazy and not really mechanically inclined, so I'm hoping a recently refurbished deck will last long enough to get my tape archive digitized. I really don't want to do repairs myself - at least, not yet.

BTW I ended up buying a Nakamichi BX-150 deck from ebay. The seller's ratings are 100% positive and of course Nakamichi's reputation is sterling. Here's hoping!
