How influential is the BRICS group anyway? I think the first time I heard about them was around 2010, yet I haven't seen them do much of anything. For awhile, seemed like the idea had faded...

India, China, and Russia certainly aren't the closest of friends. I don't know where Brazil or South Africa falls in all this. As for the new invitees, isn't the UAE still pretty close with the US? As is Egypt? Other than potentially being "Anti-West" -- not even sure how true that is, aside from Russia and China -- is that really enough to unite such a group that's spread out quite geographically? Feel like adding more cooks to the kitchen just makes things even more complicated for BRICS or whatever they're gonna call themselves now.

Many countries, like South Africa and India, made specific statements this last meeting that the group was not anti West. They're not really united in much.

They're an economic alliance, that's all, they're not anti-west or whatever. The only thing that unites them is business deals and the prospect of improving their economy, you don't hear about...

      Here, from wikipedia:

The BRICS were originally identified for the purpose of highlighting investment opportunities and had not been a formal intergovernmental organization.[9] Since 2009, they have increasingly formed into a more cohesive geopolitical bloc, with their governments meeting annually at formal summits and coordinating multilateral policies. Bilateral relations among BRICS are conducted mainly on the basis of non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit.[10]

The BRICS are considered the foremost geopolitical rival to the G7 bloc of leading advanced economies, announcing competing initiatives such as the New Development Bank, the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement, the BRICS payment system, the BRICS Joint Statistical Publication and the BRICS basket reserve currency. Since 2022, the group has sought to expand membership, with several developing countries expressing interest in joining.[13] BRICS have received both praise[14][15][16][17] and criticism[18][19][20] from numerous commentators.
