I'm generally of the belief that both Trump and Brexit were weaponized elections intended to promote general instability (this seems widely accepted) but with a primary focus on the EU and consequently NATO.
Everyone's busy looking at their part of the picture that the bigger one seems to never fall into focus, or if it does, we're quickly distracted by a new "painting" whether it's Presidential pardons or Teresa May stumbling.
And until the three parties can coalesce, I'm not sure what can happen if the EU won't step into a stronger role. But they've counted on US for so long, they lack the ability to have a muscular response, or threat of one.
This, generally, makes me very sad and frustrated. Putin is completely getting away with everything and everyone's distracted. It's brilliant in that we're dumb enough to go along.
