I feel like we're seeing more and more policies like these popping up worldwide. The Rohingya genocide is the first example that comes to mind. The U.S. dabbled in this sort of hostile, extreme authority with its family separation policies a little while back.

It's startling to see these policies gaining international popularity among world leaders.

This is also just a well-written story about a topic nobody is talking about, I think. So I wanted to share it.

Honest question: what is the answer to this problem? Is there one at all? Bonus question: why are sweet taters so dang good?

Honest answer: In the U.S., at least, I think the answer lies through strong, left-wing political organizing. Right-wing politics is currently leading the charge of these hyper-national, dangerous policies. Nationalism is woven into right-wing ideals, and that is contributing to this long-term strangling of civil politics. However much one may disagree with the left, they place less emphasis on any given nation than on the welfare of its people, and the U.S. needs less of the prior to avoid continued calamity. Worldwide, I have no idea. The answer, for the average person, may just to wait and hope things fizzle out. Rebel in whatever small ways they can - by liking tweets or supporting opposition parties - but realistically, nobody can sacrifice their lives and take up arms against these sorts of regimes, which is what real change requires at this point. There will always be a few ready to do so, but there simply aren't enough to make a meaningful difference.

Bonus answer: What's wrong with you? Sweet taters are abominations of all root vegetables and should be exterminated. No starch is meant to be sweet - it is an affront to nature. (/s)
