facebook is definitely the major culprit in the tanking of many outlets, but on some level, a lot of web-based outlets really should have known better than to try the "pivot to video" strategy or to tether their sails to the fickle, ever-changing machinations of facebook. because let's be real: if your model heavily relies on the continued consistency of a website you don't control and which has never demonstrated consistency on any level, you've fucked yourself from the start.
even though it would have no doubt been just ruinous to a lot of outlets as buying in has been, in retrospect, the only winning move with facebook for basically everybody was to not play. instead, facebook got a lot of people to play along, and when the model collapsed, the result was a lot of people getting burned very badly and now journalism on the web isn't in the best place.
Ill just leave this comment here as a reminder that facebooks privacy record is enough reason to never use their services ever. Although I do imagine I am preaching to the choir a bit on a site...
