A mid engine sports car that weighs 1,873 pounds (850 kilograms) and makes 215 horsepower would be an absolute blast.

For reference, my modified 1995 NA Miata weighs just around 2,000 pounds and makes 137 horsepower.

This is actually quite exciting. As someone who could see themselves buying a ND Miata in the future, this car would, as reported so far, be a compelling alternative.

The turbocharged three cylinder engine is also unique, because adding a fourth cylinder and dropping the turbo would leave you at probably the same weight, same power, and arguably be more reliable, so I wonder if there is more to the engine design than has been revealed. The news of a manual gearbox is also nice, as always.

And wow! A price under £40,000 (currently $53,000-ish) is double compelling.

I really hope this comes to the US, especially since Alpine is nowhere to be found.

Oh and yeah, the design/manufacturing process for the car sounds cool too.

I'm guessing the engine is a derivative/tuned version of the 1.5L Ecoboost I3 that the Fiesta ST uses. I think the smaller footprint of the I3 might be the reason for choosing it here over an I4.

Hm, you appear to be correct, as this article by TopGear confirms:

He also specified the engine will be a mid-mounted 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo, making 220bhp, and it’ll use a six-speed manual transmission.

That makes me wonder if this car will use a transverse layout, which also tends to save a bit of space. It does slightly complicate things though, but only if we assume that this will be a rear wheel drive car, as it surely must be.
