As a Bernie supporter, I'm more inclined to give Beto a chance after reading this. Just the fact that he was so technically capable in 1988 is appealing.

Moreover, I'm surprised and impressed to find out that O'Rourke has a personality. I'm in California, so I wasn't paying a ton of attention to his most recent campaign, but all the national media really seemed to get across was that he was notably distinct from Human Biped Ted Cruz. For a 16 year-old on a BBS in 1988, his writing's not even inexplicably over-edgy.

Oh, for sure -- I didn't mean to imply that his writing isn't pretty edgy, just that it's about as edgy as I would expect a 16 year-old on a BBS to be. I'd almost be disappointed in him if it...

It's pretty edgy imo, but some of it is a little more serious.

However, I do have to disagree with the over-edgy comment, in the "A feature on money" text file he lays out some writing that just screams "teenage anarchist". It's pretty edgy imo, but some of it is a little more serious.

it also demonstrates a better understanding of anarchism than probably 90% of people, though. his methods for achieving this end definitely wouldn't work, but his analysis in that document is pretty well in line with anarchist theory and is actually quite good for a teenager in 1988 in a country where anarchism has never really been in vogue.

For sure. It just feels edgy since we know how he ended up, a pro-business democrat and software entrepreneur; not very anarchist. I don't know, I can't psychoanalyze from a 3 paragraph text file, maybe he legitimately believed in the ideology and was turned away by some series of events in his life.

i suspect he was never an anarchist for the simple reason that if he was, he'd probably not include that bit about his idea there being achieved nonviolently, since very few anarchists genuinely subscribe to pure nonviolence as a way to achieve anarchism. still, it's an interesting trajectory and it's pretty wild that he has like no fucking personality nowadays.
