new york has a number of pretty bad prisons, of which the metropolitan detention center is apparently one, and this fire which happened on friday is the second major incident this year which has fucked the inmate population there. as the article notes, earlier in the year there were big problems at the facility when an electrical fire knocked out power and left hundreds of prisoners in sub-freezing temperatures for days (this garnered national attention). this weekend, the prisoners in the MDC (and in other new york facilities like rikers island) also got to bake in cells which mostly lack air conditioning and have relatively little circulation of air of any kind. fun!

as near as i can tell, there are no formal follow-up stories to this yet, but it and the whole heat wave thing has been a bit of an ordeal on twitter because obviously, not the best humanitarian situation, so if something crops up there as an update to this i guess i'll add that at some point.
