While it’s a nice explanatory video, it covers only half the story. To be clear, there might be lots to debate in the specifics, but it’s first important to understand the motivation behind the policy changes.

The context for these reforms is the larger government policy of moving from a supervisory/operational role to a less heavy-handed regulatory role, and enabling robust market mechanisms. Eg: There is potential to massively improve agricultural productivity, but it is difficult to motivate capital investments for the same when output prices are strictly regulated outside market mechanisms.

So the story must be seen in the larger context of weaning off agriculture from direct to indirect government support. In a sense, it’s understandable that the regions where the current system works best (entrenched vested interests) are the ones vociferously protesting the change.

The debate involves a lot of domestic politics and very important policy questions (including diversification of production, and imports of non-grain agri-products). For a more thorough discussion, see the coverage by Shekhar Gupta at The Print https://youtu.be/B9hSADKW3Cc
