This is a good thing in some ways, as phosphate fertilizers are vital to feeding the world, but this doubling of the world's proven reserves also mean that there's no economic incentive to use them judiciously. This has widely acknowledged knock-on effects including overgrowth of algae fueled by the unused portion of the fertilizer being washed into waterways. This is a win, but it's so much harder to convince people to take care of the world around them when there's fewer economic incentives.

The very first paragraph of this article exposes a flaw in most of this type of resource reporting. The article states that this find is "containing enough minerals to meet global demand for those products for the next 100 years." When what they mean to write is that it is "containing enough minerals to meet global demand for those products for the next 100 years, at the current levels of consumption," which definitely won't hold steady for long. Our resource usage increases at an exponential rate, and while this find might double the amount of resource that we know about, it'll only extend the amount of time we have before the resource is depleted by a fraction of these posted amounts.

Exponential growth is real, and it is often difficult to intuit.

And it's something that we deseprately need to get away from.
