This is an interesting Q&A with a microbiologist discussing how probiotics might be used to improve coral health and avoid bleaching. Considering the world's trajectory for climate change we'll need to find even more more ways like this to actively support ecosystems we've threatened or destroyed.

The issue is does something like this slow down the urgency to address the real problems around global warming and I personally am torn. I feel like it helps the conspiracy minded people's argument that global warming not real because we were warned about reefs dying but look you can swim and see one. They'll ignore the evidence of this put in place as a stop gap.
I don't personally think we have to worry about global warming deniers because I don't think their conclusions come from a place of evidence. They'll definitely make the argument you suggest about...

They'll definitely make the argument you suggest about reefs not being dead. But I don't think that's why someone would become a climate denier. But I also agree and hope these stop-gaps don't encourage more inaction.
