    We can hope that those pushing gene driven species into the ecosystem have performed due diligence on the Anopheles' natural predators and others that might transmit this altered code up the food chain. But I wouldn't count on it.

    Also there's the case of science using the African Continent (again) as its experimental playground.

    Whatever the risks of this technology there are substantial risks with inaction as well. If it can be shown to be safe and effective I hope a program of malaria eradication using this technology...

    Malaria sickens more than 200 million people each year and kills more than 400,000, mostly young children.

    Whatever the risks of this technology there are substantial risks with inaction as well. If it can be shown to be safe and effective I hope a program of malaria eradication using this technology can start soon because the cost of delay is measured in hundreds of thousands of human lives per year.
