One of the saddest realizations of my life was facing the reality that we, as a human society, will never make it to space as a whole without corporate sponsorship in one way, shape, or form. It's too hard to get people, let alone large sums of people, to understand the benefits of knowledge and exploration for their own sake.

There is a Japan-based company doing something a bit similar, shooting stars on demand. They seem less awful at first, but their long term plans are similar to the Russian company. At least the "shooting stars" are a much more transient event than orbiting pixels.

I thought they were planning to do this for the Olympic's opening ceremony. Did that idea get scrapped? No mention of it in that article.

They are/were. I just spent a few minutes searching with date filters and I can't find any official word of the Olympics past the last 2018 announcement. However, they launched on January 23rd! I have a bit of a hard time with this. It totally appeals to my love of the cyberpunk aesthetic, but then I remember that cyberpunk is dystopian :]

edit: For anyone reading this, here is a link to Astro Live Experiences' website. Specifically their news section which mentions the launch and their contribution to an interesting tether for space debris removal.

Regarding their readiness, the first satellite is just a test of control, comms, and de-orbiting?

Future Operation Plan for the Satellite

After the satellite enters orbit, it will perform a functionality check in orbit, and will start the de-orbiting mission approximately 1.5-2 months after the launch. This mission will lower the satellite’s altitude from 500km down to below 400km, and the satellite will be deploying the DOM®:De-Orbit Mechanism1 for this mission.

Development Status of the Second Satellite

ALE’s second satellite that will generate man made meteors is currently being developed. This satellite is estimated to be completed in around the Spring of 2019, and its launch is currently scheduled for around the summer of 2019.

From the company's website: That truly is a unbelievably strange dystopia to imagine.

    From the company's website:

    The dream
Andy Warhol said: “The most beautiful thing in Tokyo is McDonald's. The most beautiful thing in Stockholm is McDonald's. The most beautiful thing in Florence is McDonald's. Peking and Moscow don't have anything beautiful yet.”
Space has to be beautiful. With the best brands our sky will amaze us every night.
No ugly place there after this.

That truly is a unbelievably strange dystopia to imagine.

I woulf like to see this happen and the first few brands take a huge public backlash for having done that. I am sure as hell almost nobody will appreciate that, and this will go where radium underwear went in almost no time. The sky, the night sky is so significant to such a majority of people that messing with that is not a good idea at all.

It is surprising how lame people can be...
