The 2021 NHL Playoffs start tomorrow (May 15th)

Ignoring a few COVID delayed games occurring next week (future trivia question!), the NHL Playoffs kick off tomorrow with the Washington Capitals playing the Boston Bruins. Despite the remaining games, all the playoff matchups have been set for the first round:

  • Edmonton Oilers vs Winnipeg Jets
  • Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens
  • Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues
  • Las Vegas Golden Knights vs Minnesota Wild
  • Boston Bruins vs Washington Capitals
  • Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders
  • Tampa Bay Lightning vs Florida Panthers
  • Carolina Hurricanes vs Nashville Predators

For any of you that might not be huge hockey fans, the playoffs are a great time to watch as the level of play and intensity is elevated from the regular season, in my opinion, well beyond anything seen in any of the other leagues.

For the rest of you who's your team this year? Who are you cheering for and who are you excited to watch?

And finally the requisite yearly NHL playoffs commercial.

Yay, more hockey on here! I'm a Blues fan and I'm kinda scared of the Avs ;) Their team is superb and it'll take a miracle to pull an upset, but Tampa probably remembers that those can happen,...

The good thing about these playoffs: the Blues have nothing to lose. The road to the Cup would probably be: Avs, Vegas, Leafs/Oilers and then the Eastern Champ. So yeah, I don't think they'll be the favorite in any of those and the Blues like the underdog role. And there's no shame in losing to any of them since they are all really good teams. There are plenty of models who have the Blues at a less than 20% chance of making it to the 2nd round. The Athletic had a couple of good articles on that matchup and what the Blues have to do to actually win (The top 5 Avs players account for more games won than the entirety of the Blues roster). If they can get in Grubauers head and don't take too many penalties, there's a chance, but it'll still be really, really hard. As long as they put up a fight, I'm happy.

If the Blues are out, I'm probably rooting for the Panthers, I had a couple of their players on my fantasy team and so I followed them a bit more this season and I guess their franchise could need a push.

All in all, I'm fairly excited for the games and the series. Seems like lots of teams are either hitting their peak performance this season or having one last shot before rebuilding and I'm sure there'll be an upset here or there.

    Let's go Blues!
