The hockey phenom and generational talent has done what was believed to be nearly impossible in the modern NHL and scored 100 points in 53 games with a four point (and possibly more) night against the Vancouver Canucks. It can be rare for the league's best players to put away 100 points in a standard 82 game season, McDavid having done so during the COVID shortened season is particularly exceptional.

McDavid becomes the first player to score 100+ in the first 56 games in a quarter of a century. Mario Lemieux (116) and Jaromir Jagr (104) were the last to do it, in 1995-96 for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He is only the ninth player in NHL history to do so. McDavid currently leads the league in points, with the runner-up (his teammate Leon Draisatl) nearly 20 points behind and the third place points leader trailing by 30 points.

Altogether Connor McDavid's consistent dominance since entering the league, and assured improvement as he enters his prime, places him firmly in the conversation as one of the NHL's best players of all time. At 24 his name sits next to the likes of "Wayne Gretzky" and "Mario Lemieux" when discussing hockey's GOAT status.

Ignoring a few COVID delayed games occurring next week (future trivia question!), the NHL Playoffs kick off tomorrow with the Washington Capitals playing the Boston Bruins. Despite the remaining games, all the playoff matchups have been set for the first round:

      • Edmonton Oilers vs Winnipeg Jets
      • Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens
      • Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues
      • Las Vegas Golden Knights vs Minnesota Wild
      • Boston Bruins vs Washington Capitals
      • Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders
      • Tampa Bay Lightning vs Florida Panthers
      • Carolina Hurricanes vs Nashville Predators

For any of you that might not be huge hockey fans, the playoffs are a great time to watch as the level of play and intensity is elevated from the regular season, in my opinion, well beyond anything seen in any of the other leagues.

For the rest of you who's your team this year? Who are you cheering for and who are you excited to watch?

And finally the requisite yearly NHL playoffs commercial.
