For flights, earlier is generally better of course. Services worth using:
SkyScanner.net – pretty straightforward directory of flights
Matrix software – maintained by Google, but not commercialised which is good. Note that the database of flights it searches is far from complete.
Google Flights – usually offers reasonably cheap flights
It may also be worth getting an airline credit card – generally redeeming in a higher cash:points ratio is better value. Of course the standard credit card stuff applies (pay the balance in full every month, don't buy more than you otherwise would, etc).

Hopper has been absolutely disastrous for me... to the point we had to push a trip to Paris by a week once we realized it was about to fuck us over. If we had trusted it and waited, we wouldn't have been able to go at all. It also almost screwed us on a trip to Puerto Rico but that time we already knew it wasn't trustworthy so we didn't wait at all.
So give it a shot, but don't trust it. If you're going anything other than the cheapest coach, expect it not to work right.

Hopper has been pretty good in my experience
Hard to accurately compare the different services though tbh

Oh wow good to know. Probably good practice to use more than one tracker and then book directly with the airline…
