And yeah Acceptable Christmas has a long way to go but my partner is super into Christmas and Christmas music while I am very much not, so that's my cautious attempt at finding some middle ground there lol

I agree with you that it's not really OG bossa nova, but cfabbro makes a good point! There's definitely bossa nova inspiration (especially if you include second-and-third-gen big band bossa jazz) in the lineage of this Laufey tune. Thanks for posting this by the way! Fun to see modern artist lean into this aesthetic.

I've been 'curating' (read: sloppily adding whole albums to and then sometimes deleting single songs from) a playlist that would make good background music for a fictional tiki bar in the desert that you might be interested in:

    https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1pAIKcEt3uHdmHci6WvA1x

Note that it's all instrumental, and definitely has some genre variation that you're NOT asking about (i.e. surf-rock, dub reggae, psychedelica, etc) but I would say the core of it is music that would fit in really nicely with your request (Dave Pike, Martin Denny, Walter Wanderley, Al Caiola, Cal Tjader, Pierre Cavali, etc) and lots of more modern artists that are doing stuff in similar styles (Tikiyaki Orchestra, Kava Kon, The Sorcerers, Kolombo, etc.)

I'll definitely be combing this thread for more artists to add there!

I read the whole article, which seemed to mention some kind of financial mismanagement and talks about why he maybe wasn’t the anti-racist superstar the world needed, but what did he actually do that made him “fall”?

For real though, that's like the argument for passenger jets. But we should really be working towards a world where a journey of less than 1500 miles or so that doesn't cross an ocean should be served efficiently by rail.

can we do that without going backwards on women's rights?

    Yes!

One of the central fallacies that Peterson, Tate, etc espouse is that this is somehow a zero-sum game. It's not, and that kind of thinking actively undermines both genders as we strive for increased rights for women AND as we contemplate the struggles men endure. (Also, it ignores the possibilities of gender outside the binary, but that's a whole other can o' worms that would kinda sidetrack the discussion at hand.)

In theory, both sexes should be on the same team here - the rhetorical cheap shot is: won't women be in general better off if there are fewer Rogan bros and Tate acolytes?

But more thoughtfully: a lot of these issues facing men hurt women as well. (e.g. men channeling their aggression into domestic violence) and a lot of the issues facing women hurt men (e.g. the gatekeeping that keeps them out of certain spaces making it less likely for men in those spaces to socialize with and date women).

The author touched on this a little but reframing this as a lift-each-other-up thing is the way.

With regard to the "suck it up" train of thought

Perhaps I should only speak for myself but I don’t feel like a lot of people subscribe to this train (heh) of thought. I think most rail advocates feel like high speed rail travel is already a viable alternative to air travel for the places you can reach using it; if more corridors were accessible by high speed rail, air travel wouldn’t be as competitive and would be used by fewer people (thereby lessening the environmental effect, to get back to the original point of the thread).

I’m not very familiar with the situation in the UK but I did use the Eurostar the one time I visited and it’s a shame they’re limiting service. In the states it feels like passenger train service has been deliberately neglected in favor of automobile infrastructure; trains go almost nowhere, very slowly, and the equipment is 30 years old at best… if you want company in the joke about serious projects look up the high speed rail project in California. (At least they’re trying.)

I mean, that dirigible looks seriously cool, and don’t get me wrong, I would absolutely try flying in one if given the opportunity. But if we’re trying to answer the question in the title, a luxury sky yacht barely faster than a car isn’t the answer.

Can green technologies make a difference before it’s too late?

Guys, it’s trains. Trains are the answer. High speed electrified trains powered by renewable energy is the future of long distance transportation .
